இந்து மதப் புராணங்களின் படி, பகவான் பரசுராமர் கோகர்னா மற்றும் கன்னியாகுமரி இடையே நிலத்தை உருவாக்கினார்.கர்த்தாவிரியா அர்ஜுனன் மற்றும் பிற க்ஷத்திரியர்களைக் கொன்ற பின்னர் பிராமணர்களுக்கு நன்கொடை வழங்குவதற்காக தனது கோடரியைப் பயன்படுத்தி கேரளாவை கடலில் இருந்து மீட்கப்பட்டதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. [1] அவர் இந்த நிலத்தை 64 கிராமங்களாக பிரித்தார். இந்த 64 கிராமங்களில் 32 கிராமங்கள் பெரும்புழா மற்றும் கோகர்ணாஇடையே உள்ளது.இங்கு பேச்சு வடிவ மொழியாக இருந்தது துளு. மீதமுள்ள 32 கிராமங்கள் பெரும்புழா மற்றும் கன்னியாகுமரி இடையே மலையாள மொழி பேசும் பகுதியில் இருந்தன. மகா விஷ்ணுவின் ஆறாவது அவதாரமான பரசுராமர், ஜமதக்னி மற்றும் ரேணுகாவின் இளைய மகன் ஆவார். புராணங்களின் படி, இந்த நிலத்தை பிராமணர்களுக்கு நன்கொடையாக அளித்த பின்னர், இந்த 64 கிராமங்களில் நூற்று எட்டு மகா சிவலிங்கம் மற்றும் துர்கா சிலைகள் நிறுவப்பட்டன. இந்த நூற்று எட்டு சிவன் கோயில்கள் சிவால சோத்திரத்தில் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளன, இந்த பாடல் மலையாள மொழியில் எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.
