The [[city proper]] had a population of 772,873 at the 2004 census<ref>[http://statistics.sl/2004_population_and_housing_census_tables.pdf Statistics Sierra Leone, 2004 Population and Housing Census]</ref>, with a current estimate of 1,070,200 (about 17% of Sierra Leone's total population). The population of Freetown is [[ethnically]], [[culturally]] and religiously diverse. The city is home to significant numbers of all of the country's [[ethnic group]]s, although it is the primary home of the [[Sierra Leone Creole people]] (descendants of [[Sierra Leone Liberated African|Liberated Africans]], [[African-Americans]] and [[West Indian]]s) who make up the minority of the population in the city. As in virtually all parts of Sierra Leone, the [[Krio language]] is the city's primary language of communication and is by far the most widely spoken language in the city.
