'''நண்டு வடிவ நெபுலா''' (Crab nebula) என்பது M 1 என்று மெசியர் படத் தொகுப்பில் முதலாவதாக இடம் பெற்றுள்ள, சீட்டா(ζ)டாரிக்கு மிக அருகாமையில், ஏறக்குறைய 6500 ஒளி ஆண்டுகள் தொலைவில் உள்ள நெபுலாவாகும். இதை டாரெஸ் A என்று வானவியலாளர்கள் குறிப்பிடுகின்றார்கள். இந்த நெபுலாவின் விளிம்பில் காணப்படும் வரி இழைகள், நண்டின் கால்கள் மற்றும் உணர் கொம்புகள் போலத் தோன்றுகின்றன. அதனால் இதை நண்டு வடிவ நெபுலா என்று அழைப்பர். இதைத் தொலை நோக்கியால் மட்டுமே பார்க்க முடியும். இது நீள் வட்டக் கோள வடிவில், விண்ணில் தோன்றும் ஒரு சூரியக் கோளுக்கும், முழு நிலவிற்கும் இடையே இருக்குமாறு உருவ அளவைக் கொண்டுள்ளது. இதை 1731 ல் இங்கிலாந்து நாட்டு மருத்துவரும் பொழுதுபோக்கு வானவியலாருமான ஜான் பெவிஸ்(John Bevis)என்பாரும், 27 ஆண்டுகளுக்குப் பிறகு பிரான்சு நாட்டு வால்மீன் ஆய்வாளரான சார்லஸ் மெசியரும் தனித்தனியாகக் கண்டுபிடித்தனர்.
