பிரபுக்கள் அவையில் பல உறுப்பினர்கள் ''கிராஸ் பென்ச்சர்கள்'' எனப்படுகின்றனர். இவர்கள் அரசுக்கு ஆதரவான அல்லது எதிர்க்கட்சிகளைச் சாராதவர்கள்; அரசியல் கட்சிகளுக்கு அப்பாற்பட்டவர்கள். அவைக்கூடத்தில் இவர்களுக்கான இருக்கைகள் ஆளும் கட்சி உறுப்பினர்களுக்கும் எதிர்கட்சி உறுப்பினர்களுக்கும் இடையே உள்ள நடையில் அமைக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதால் இப்பெயர் அமைந்தது.
