Manavai Mustafa Field Service to Tamil
Manavai Mustafa is rendering his unstinted services during the past five decades for the development of Tamil as well as for promoting religious harmony. His services are manifold.

1. Scientific Tamil
He is continuously conducting research in this regard – published “Kalam Thedum Tamil” (Tamil–Relevant to our times) During the past five decades, his services have earned him the name “The Father of Scientific Tamil”.
2. Journalism
“Puthaka Nanban” – a monthly journal has been edited by him from 1965 onwards. Served as the editor of the “UNESCO Courier” for the past 35 years. Out of the editors of the thirty different languages of the world, he was honoured by the UNESCO for his seniority. He was the first Indian Tamilian to receive that honour.
Out of the editions of the UNESCO Courier brought out in 30 languages, he was able to secure the fourth place for the Tamil edition. Thereby he established the potentiality of Tamil which is equal to that of English and French. This is a feather on his cap.
At his instance, on, “Living Culture of Tamils” – a special number was published in 30 languages and thus be propagated Tamil Culture throughout the world. Under the title “Heritage of India – Past and Present” he caused the publication of a special issue and this he propagated the glory of India around the world.
3. Coining or Inventing Technical Terms
He gives utmost importance to this task realizing the need for such a task for the development of any languages. So far, he has coined about Eight lakhs of such technical terms. He has compiled them in the form of a Encyclopaedic Tamil Scientific Technical Dictionary. Perhaps this is is first of its kind in Tamil and such in the whole of India.
4. Translation
Realizing the dire need of translation for the development of Tamil as the world is making headway in the scientific and technological arena, he has outlined 12 modes of translation. He has written a comprehensive grammar for that and published a book entitled “Kaalam Thedum Tamil” (Tamil relevant to our times)
The Govt. of Tamil Nadu has honoured him by conferring the title, “Translator Par Excellence”.
5. Script Reforms
Tamil Script has undergone numerous changes during the past. The number of Tamil letters also has been varying from time to time. According to Mustafa mere 31 letters are enough to convey the phonetics of all the 247 letter . He advocates this theory on the basis of the numerous stone inscriptions.
6. Creative Science Literature
He thinks in that line and has authored a book with a title “Creative Science Fiction in Tamil”. This book has been prescribed as a textbook in a number of Autonomous Colleges.
7. Children’s Literature
“Encyclopaedia for Children”, “Islamic Encyclopaedia for Youth” – are his masterly contributions, made with the purpose of educating the future generation.
8. Publications
He has been instrumental from 1965 for the publication of about 150 books under the aegis of the Southern Languages Book Trust. He is considered to be the senior most editor in the field of publication.
9. Islamic Literature
In the year 1975, he organised and conducted a Seminar on “Seerapuranam” in Chennai. He conducted 8 such seminars. He used the services of the learned Tamil Scholar Silamboli Chellappan for delivering a series of lectures on “Seerpuranam” and “Rajanayagam”.
During 1977 Jamal Mohamed College, Trichy followed him and conducted an Islamic Conference. He has analysed the Tamil literature from the angle of modern scientific thoughts and has written a number of books on this subject.
