பலமிழந்து வந்த உதுமானியப் பேரரசின் ஆட்சிகுட்பட்ட பகுதிகளில் தங்களது தாக்கத்தை நிலைநிறுத்த ஐரோப்பிய அரசுகள் நடத்திய நீண்ட போராட்டத்தின் ஓர் அங்கமே [[கிரீமியப் போர்]] (1853–1856) ஆகும். இந்தப் போரினால் ஏற்பட்ட நிதி நெருக்கடியால் ஆகத்து 4, 1854இல் உதுமானியப் பேரரசு 5 மில்லியன் பவுண்டுகளுக்கு வெளிநாட்டுக் கடன்கள் பெற்றது.<ref>{{cite book|author=V.
