The genus ''Cannabis'' was formerly placed in the [[Urtica|Nettle]] ([[Urticaceae]]) or [[Mulberry]] ([[Moraceae]]) family, and later, along with the ''[[Humulus]]'' genus ([[hops]]), in a separate family, the [[Hemp]] family (Cannabaceae [[sensu stricto]]).<ref name=schultes2001a>Schultes, R.
