இந்த தீவுகள் 500 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு போர்த்துகீசரலால் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டன. அப்போது அங்கு பழங்குடிகள் யாரும் இருக்கவில்லை. இது காலனித்துவ காலத்தில் கப்பல் போக்குவரத்துக்கு ஒரு கேந்திர முக்கியத்துவம் வாய்ந்த இடமாக இருந்தது. பல குற்றவாளிகள் இங்கு விடப்பட்டனர். [[நெப்போலியன்|நெப்பொலியனும்]] இங்கு நாடுகடத்தப்பட்டிருந்தான். 1659 ஆம் ஆண்டு இது பிரித்தானியாவின் ஆட்சிக்கு வந்தது.
