'''யாழ்ப்பாணம் மத்திய கல்லூரி''' என்று இன்று பெயர் பெற்றுள்ள பாடசாலையே இலங்கையில் அமைக்கப்பட்ட முதலாவது [[பாடசாலை|பாடசாலையாகும்]]. இக் கல்லூரி [[1816]] ஆம் ஆண்டில் நிறுவப்பட்டது. அப்போது இதன் பெயர் யாழ்ப்பாணம் வெஸ்லியன் ஆங்கிலப் பாடசாலை. பின்னர் [[1825]] தற்போது வேம்படி மகளிர் கல்லூரி இருக்கும் இடத்துக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டது. வெஸ்லியன் மிஷனைச் சேர்ந்த வண. [[பீட்டர் பேர்சிவல்]] பாதிரியாரால் [[1834]] ஆம் ஆண்டில் இதன் பெயர் யாழ்ப்பாணம் மத்திய பாடசாலை என மாற்றப்பட்டது<ref>பக். 163, 179, Martin, J.H., ''Notes on Jaffna'', American Ceylon Mission Press, தெல்லிப்பழை, இலங்கை, 1923</ref>. ஆண்கள் பாடசாலையான இது யாழ்ப்பாண நகரப் பகுதியில் அமைந்துள்ளது. இது ஒரு தேசிய பாடசாலை ஆகும்.
