In Srilanka ,Haggala Botanical Garden is a famous and unique tourist place.

It is situated in the Hill country of Srilanka. The climate is suitable for various plants growth. There are about 4000 indigenous plants and over 3000 that are of foreign origin.

LOCATION and CLIMATE

Haggala botanical garden is on of the five botanical gardens in srilanka.the other four are peradeniya , henarathgoda, mirijawala and seetawaka botanical  garden .haggala is the second largest garden in sriLanka.it is situated on the nuwara-eliya_baddulla main Road,16km from nuwar-eliya.

The garden has a cool temperature  climate because of attitude is 5,400 feet above the sea level.the mean annual temperature ranges between 16 to 30 c during cource of a year. from December  to February it has a cold climate, while  the warm climate persists from April to august.During the south west monsoon gusts of strong winds blow across the gardens towards the uva valley, making weird sounds ,during October to december.when thick mist envelope the gardens, heavy downpours of rainfalls more frequent in the afternoon and evenings.

The garden was established in 1861, under as George Henry thwaits an experimental cultivation of a cinchono .it was turned into an experimental tea cultivation.  In 1884 it transformed to a garden. Since then many sub tropical and some temperate plants were planted in the gardens.Thwaites was initially an accountant and studied botany during his spare time. He became a recognized botanist.In March 1849, on the death of George cardner, Thwaites was appointed superintendent of the botanical gardens at peradeniya, Ceylon. A position he held until he resigned in 1879.

OLD STORY

It says srilankan powerful king Ravana after  abducting sita, kept her hidden in this area was offered to sita as a pleasure garden, the place finds mention in the Ramayana as ashok vatika. The area was named an ‘sita eliya’. And ‘sita Amman temple ’ was built on the site.

During the spring season in nuwara eliya thousands of  visitors come to see the blooms here . Number of annual visitors are about 500,000.
