The name Saliyar is an ancient Tamil, the Saliyar (TN) community mostly lives in the deep southern Tamil Nadu (Districts – Virudhunagar, Madurai & Theni) and speaks only Tamil and is mostly leaning on Tamil culture. Saliyar beliefs are ancestor worship, part of the Shiva tradition. Often joined with the Saiva Pillai and Mudhaliyars. Saliyar speaks only Tamil in Tamil Nadu and they do not know any other local languages. Nesa Nayanar was one of the 63 Nayanas of the Saliyar community, which is clearly mentioned in the PERIYA PURANAM. The British government simply gave the name Saliyar to different people who had the textile industry. Some amateur historians have proposed that they settled in 600-1000 years from Andhra. But I seriously doubt this proposal, This is because most of the migrants from Andhra Pradesh still speak Telugu and their customs are mostly leaning on the Telugu culture.
