The concept of matter is highly difficult to define. Traditionally, matter is defined as anything that has mass and occupies space. From certain prospective everything in the world is made up of matter.

The word “matter” does not translate very well in Tamil. In Tamil world view does not accept that world is only composed of matter or material things. But, examples of non-matter items such as “soul” or “thoughts” are hard to prove or consider as non material. For instance, thoughts have been equated to events in the brain.
