ஈதர் (செவ்வியல் தனிமம்)

ஈதர் (aether)) (/ˈθər/) அல்லது விசும்பு (quintessence) (ஐந்தாம் செவ்வியல் தனிமம்) என்பது, பண்டைய, இடைக்கால அறிவியல் வரலாற்றின்படி, புவிக்கோளத்துக்கு மேலே அமையும் அண்டம் முழுவதும் நிரம்பியுள்ள பொருள் ஊடகமாகும்.[1] ஈதர் எனும் கருத்தின்ம் பல கோட்பாடுகளில் பல இயற்கை நிகழ்வுகளைக் குறிப்பிட பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது. ஒளி அலைப் பரவலையும் ஈர்ப்பு அலைப் பரவலையும் போன்ற நிகழ்வுகளை இங்கு எடுத்துகட்டுகளகக் கூறலாம். 19 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டில், இயற்பியலாளர்கள் ஈதர் என்ற பொருள் ஊடகம் வெளி எங்கணும் பரவியுள்ளதெனும் எடுகோளினை வெற்றிட்த்தில் ஒளியலைப் பரவலை விளக்க முன்வைத்தனர். ஆனால் மிக்கேல்சன்–மோர்லி செய்முறை ஈதர் போன்ற் ஊடகம் வெற்றிடத்தில் நிலவவில்லை என்பதை நிறுவியது.
