Plot
Annamalai (Prabhu) is a single parent to Karthik (Kalidas) and owns an Indian restaurant in Malaysia. Annamalai is very fond of Karthik and loves to spend time with him. But Karthik is a fun loving person who spends most of his time with friends and thinks his father is too emotional. Karthik falls in love with his classmate Pavithra (Ashna Zaveri), daughter of an IFS officer (Urvashi) who is separated from her husband (Thalaivasal Vijay). Meanwhile Mala (Pooja Kumar) is a don who falls in love with Annamalai, impressed by his cooking style. Annamalai worries that Karthik always prioritizes his friends than him. One day, they meet a saint Swami (Kamal Haasan) who swaps both Annamalai and Karthik’s souls to make them understand each other’s love. Now Annamalai (in Karthik’s body) goes to college while Karthik (in Annamalai’s body) takes care of the restaurant.

Annamalai understands Karthik’s love for Pavithra and gets close to her family. He also helps Urvashi to patch up with her husband in India. Similarly Karthik understands the hardships faced by Annamalai in raising him from childhood following his mother's early demise and realizes his true love. Karthik also plans to get Mala married to Annamalai. There is also a don (M.S. Bhaskar) who happens to be Mala’s boss and he does not want Mala to get married to Annamalai. Don kidnaps Pavithra and Mala. Following a comical fight both are saved. Now Karthik apologizes to Annamalai for not understanding his love towards him. Immediately both the souls are swapped back. The movie ends with Karthik getting united with Pavithra while Mala and Annamalai are also united.

Production
Dushyanth Ramkumar opted to set up a new production house, separate from his commitments for Sivaji Productions. They initially held Pooja for a movie named Putham Puthiya Copy in June 2015. The film was said to be a Road Fantasy Adventure Comedy Genre film with a newcomer Ganesh Kumar Mohan signed on as the Writer-Director of the film, who had directed short films like 536, Ramasamy, Kuttima and Oorukku Naalu peru. Kalidas Jayaram was selected, after the director had noted his mimicry performance in Vijay Awards stage. This was supposed to be his second Tamil film he signed after, Oru Pakka Kathai which was directed by Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom fame Balaji Tharaneetharan. That film suffered with production delays and has still remained unreleased. Further casting developments had Sruthi Hariharan, Nikki Galrani, Kavya Shetty, Shalini Vadnikatti and Anjana Jayaprakash being considered for the main female lead. Finally, it was Deepti Sati, who rose to fame with Lal Jose's blockbuster film Nee-Na grabbed the role of the female lead. Further casting was done, with comedians Karunakaran, Mottai Rajendran and Pandiarajan signed on to play pivotal roles. Technicians like Abhinav Sunder Nayak, Shaan Rahman, M. Prabhaharan and Madhesh Manickam were signed on as Editor, Music Director, Art Director and Cinematographer respectively. It was about to be a Road Fantasy comedy on the lines of Delhi Belly. Location hunt was taking place in and around Chennai, Kanchipuram, Karaikudi, Pollachi, Bangalore, Srirangam and Ranipet. Shooting was about to start on 20 August 2015. But problems with the script and production delays made them to push the shoot to 17 September 2015. But in sudden turn of events, there was a clash between the production and direction department citing issues with the script. Finally, the project was dropped in September 2015. But the production still had the dates of Kalidas, and decided to go with entirely a new team and script.
Finally, Amudhesvar who had previously worked as an associate to director Suseenthiran was signed with an entirely fresh script. Production started in October 2015 and they started scouting for locations in Malaysia for the shoot. The new film was titled Meen Kuzhambum Mann Paanaiyum, starring Kalidas Jayaram, Ashna Zaveri and Prabhu. The film began production in Chennai during November 2015 and then held a second schedule in Malaysia during January 2016. Pooja Kumar joined the team during January 2016 and revealed that she would portray a female don based in Malaysia. Kamal Haasan later shot for a cameo appearance in the film during March 2016.
