nd all schools are either entirely maintained by Governmentor assisted by grants-in-aid. Hospitals. The Government has devoted much care to the estabhsh- ment of efficient hospitals in all districts, and to the engage-ment of a full staff of qualified medical men from the UnitedKingdom, all of whom are in Government employ and arealso permitted to undertake private practice. Their numberat present is fourteen. Comfortable wards for the reception of European patientsare attached to the hospitals in the larger towns. Patientsare there attended by a resident medical officer and theGovernment nurse matron. A nursing association has been established in Perak andSelangor, which employs qualified English nurses to attendon patients in their own homes. All railways in the Federated Malay States are of metre Uailwaysgauge. The first section of line was opened in Perak in1884, since which time a large portion of the annuallyincreasing revenue of the States has been regularly expendedin further construction. All railways have been constructed by, are the propertyof, and are managed by the Government, with the exceptionof the line in Negri Sembilan connecting the port with theprincipal town, which is the property of a private company.
