Tamil versatility

In the beginning of this article, it is written that " Tamil had not suffered many a change. So, it is not that difficult to understand the ancient literary works". But, i disagree with this point. Most of the ancient literary works need a lot of literary knowledge: not everyone can easily understand them. Laymen have to get explanations from Tamil scholars to understand them.

So, could the author please justify the claim.
