sundar, the cause of odour is release of foul smelling gases due to anaerobic processes (because of lack of oxygen) taking place during the composting . And as u have mentioned in the caption of the photograph in the article ( and also as found in English wiki article), what comes out of the compost may not be steam ( which comes only after 100 degree celsius) and it can be just foul smelling gases.
