I think we can start developing this page (like the corresponding page in english wikipedia) as a source of information for editors and new wikipedians.Few things we could do here is give info about wikipedia, wikipedians, editing help, list of articles - to be developed, to be created, to be translated and to be colloborated.I hope it will fuel the growth of tamil wikipedia just like "aalamaraththadi" is performing right now!--ரவி (பேச்சு) 07:43, 7 ஏப் 2005 (UTC)

Re – visioning Community Portal

Currently, Community Portal is rarely used by the regular users (I am assuming, no stats); however, probably an important page for new users. It does not contain many of the primary links (ex “Alamarathadi”), and the layout is ad-hoc. Natkeeran, ur current revision for the community portal looks good. v can implement it (after u complete the testing). Its true that atleast I don visit community portal often. its because most of the regular users are sure how to navigate within wikipedia, and they know what is expected of them. Tamil wikipedia quality watch

If we see the raw stastics at மொழிவாரி விக்கிபீடியா பட்டியல் (தமிழ்:71-18/04/2006) for tamil, one can decipher that Tamil wikipedia is better in quality than many other wikipedias (including other indian language wikis). We have a high ratio of admins to number of users which is an indication of trust, considerable, quality contributions from the tamil wikipedians community. the articles are cosiderably lesser than the total pages which may be an indication of development of content in other namespaces like talk( indicates that articles are critiqued),template, wikipedia etc., which ultimately improves user experience. I remember mayooranathan once gave similar interpretation with detail statistics how tamil wikipedia is far superior than many other indian language wikis who just increase the article count. I hope that the similar trend in Tamil wikipedia continues while we also work at increasing article counts. With the notable absence of regular admins and notable editors, i feel, off late there is a need to copy edit ( for wikification, stub expansion, spelling correction, internal links, trimming) lot of new articles and make them conform to wiki style of writing. I request all currently active users to read and correct, improve others articles, critique in talk pages besides starting articles on their own.--ரவி 13:59, 21 ஏப்ரல் 2006 (UTC)

recently I made some interestin tables based on the metrics at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias_by_edits_per_article and it gives very very very :) encouraging trends about the quality of tamil wikipedia. I "found" it to be on par and even better than the quality of many other big wikipedias and indian language wikipedias. The results are in excel sheet, so I would need to send it by email. Requesting help in designing a barnstar

All Indian Languages using wikipedians,

Further promotion of Indic language wikipedias needs mass media publicity like Print,Radio,telvision , aproaching in academic Institutions.

Also if possible a level of field support from network engineers in India for presentation and training in usage of Indian Languages and wikipedia can be a added boon.

May I call on all indic language wikipedia users,to put our hands together to design special barnstars or suggest one which can be awarded to all those who will support our noble cause with actual field support among Indian education institutions and Indian mass media or actual field 'network'help to users.

I belive we should award barnstars to such users who can support the cause through online publicity like blogs , groups etc. also.

Betawiki: better support for your language in MediaWiki

Dear community. I am writing to you to promote a special wiki called Betawiki. This wiki facilitates the localisation (l10n) of the MediaWiki interface. You may have changed many messages here to use your language in the interface, but if you would log in to for example the Japanese language Wiktionary, you would not be able to use the interface as well translated as here. In fact, of 1,736 messages in the core of MediaWiki, 5.99% of the messages have been translated. Betawiki also supports the translation of messages for 126 extensions, with 2,174 messages. Many of them are used in WMF projects and they are vital for understanding the wiki. Currently 0.00% of the WMF extension messages have been translated. Translators for over 90 languages contribute their work to MediaWiki this way every month.

If you wish to contribute to better support of your language in MediaWiki, as well as for many MediaWiki extensions, please visit Betawiki, create an account and request translator privileges. You can see the current status of localisation of your language on MediaWiki.org and do not forget to get in touch with others that may already be working on your language on Betawiki.
