தொகுwhat is the tamil word for championship :) ? also, u can leave the aaytha ezuththu in front of ferari and formula 1 in order to follow the tamil ilakkaNam that neither mei ezuththu nor aaytha ezuththu can start a word--ரவி (பேச்சு) 11:28, 16 ஜூலை 2005 (UTC)
Championship - போட்டித்தொடர், Champion- போட்டித்தொடர் நாயகன்/நாயகி, Championship cup- போட்டிக்கிண்ணம் (Thats how they say in singapore tamil radio !) . I hope that the above translations are ok for everyone. Unlike mass media in TN, the tamil media in singapore, sri lanka are using very nice tamil words for day to day events. Very bad to see the effect of tamil kolai done by tamil media in TN that we are scratching our heads to find out tamil translations all the time :(--ரவி (பேச்சு) 11:47, 16 ஜூலை 2005 (UTC)
- Before suggesting a Tamil word for championship/champion one may want to see en:Champion and this. The word போட்டித்தொடர் நாயகன் may look good in this particular article, but not everywhere else. For example, apart from driver's championship, there is constructor's championship awarded to the most successful team every year. How do we translate that? I wanted to mention about this constructors championship in பார்முலா 1, but didn't do so as I was short of words. We should also keep in mind the different ways the word is used. Schumacher won last year's championship, and hence he is called a champion throughout this year. So, can we translate as நடப்பு 'போட்டித்தொடர் நாயகன்' or 'முந்தைய போட்டித்தொடர்' நாயகன்? Both doesn't look versatile to me. Moreover, champion is a word used not only in sports, but may denote somebody who has been a frontrunner in any other field. I believe and sincerely wish there is a versatile and simple Tamil equivalent for this word, but until we discover such a word, I think we may use the word சாம்பியன் here. But this is my personal opinion and I would go with the majority opinion here. I am also eager to know how this word is addressed in Tamil media in TN and elsewhere. - ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் 05:58, 17 ஜூலை 2005 (UTC)
- btw, the word கிண்ணம் reminds me so much of the vessel used in my kitchen ;). There is already a nice tamil word கோப்பை used to denote sports cups. correct me if this is not a tamil word :p- ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் 06:00, 17 ஜூலை 2005 (UTC)
i accept போட்டித்தொடர் நாயகன் has short comings when it comes to mentioning previous champions. The only other suggestion i can think of is வெற்றி வீரர். But one shall not worry how to use the same word in contexts other than sports . In contexts like -fore runner in some fields- we can come up with entirely different words. Its not necessary that we translate english as it is. then கோப்பை is also much used word..Just wanted to inform others that there is also a word போட்டிக்கிண்ணம் in singapore..srinivasan, u need not be so humble in giving suggestions..we are all open minded here :)--ரவி (பேச்சு) 10:03, 18 ஜூலை 2005 (UTC)
- Ofcourse, we need not worry about using the word 'champion' in contexts other than sports, but the term 'champion' has a special meaning in sports. It is a honorary *title* presented to the best performer and this title remains attached to him/her (or the team) till the next performer comes up. For example, our chola kings had the practice of giving themselves the titles Rajakesari and parakesari alternatively. How would it look like if the English speaking folks translated these titles to suit their language? Or to take a simple example, the title 'Mahatma' attached to Mohandas Gandhi is a sanskrit term meaning 'Great soul'. Do the english speakers translate this into Great Soul Gandhi? or for that matter Kalaignar Karunanidhi into Artist Karunanidhi? So in my opinion the word சாம்பியன் ought to be used here until an equivalent Tamil word comes up, and when such a word comes up, it should be a word that can be accepted by all and not just a few of us in wikipedia. And as I said earlier, I would like to know how the word is addressed in Tamil media because, if my memory serves right, Tamil television, radio, as well as print media freely use the word சாம்பியன். - ஸ்ரீநிவாசன் 17:58, 18 ஜூலை 2005 (UTC)
