• Sundar, its ok. I have moved the page about translation discussions to its original title. But there are still lot of pages starting with "wikipedia:" (example- wikipedia:FAQ).You can try naming them all starting with விக்கிபீடியா: as suggested by mayoora naathan.

I've moved the said page. If we have a list of such pages, I can write a bot to do the work.   • Ravi, I did not mentioned any thing about 1000 edits etc. I thing you read it in the relevant pages of wikipedia. Anyway don't worry about that. That is not a rule, specially ia a wiki like ours (Tamil), it will not be applicable. Ofcourse, if you become an administrator you can edit most of the system messages, which an ordinary user can't do. This will be good for the development of the Tamil Wikipedia. Ravi, I notice the good work done in model page creation and categorization. I'll definitely contribute in whatever way I can. Am currently busy reading policies for administrators as I've become an admin only today in English Wiki. I'll try to translate some of these. You can also read up the links yourself. bot

Hi sundar, there are almost 500 pages unactegorised yet ( see siRappup pakkangkaL:vakaippaduththappadaatha pakkangkaL).It will be a herculean task to manually edit them and categories.Is it possible to write some bot which will do intelligent categorisation of all those pages.?--ரவி (பேச்சு) 16:14, 8 ஏப் 2005 (UTC)

Intelligent categorisation is a tall order. I'm already thinking of that. But it needs a lot of training data (previously categorised articles). Also, the effort in building such a system may be too much compared to manually categorising 500+ articles. But, when the number of articles increase, it makes sense. I was thinking of having a list of red-linked categories and a bot to automate the process of creation of the category pages. -- Sundar 11:51, 14 ஏப் 2005 (UTC)

refreshing the cache

I tried the purge you mentioned. it is not working.the categorised pages are still showing up under the uncategorised pages view.I wonder whether this has to do something with updating the wikipedia server itself by the wikipedia people.--ரவி (பேச்சு) 17:02, 15 ஏப் 2005 (UTC)

for example the page அல்பர்ட் ஐன்ஸ்டீன் is categorised.but it is still showing up at the uncategorised pages list present in the special pages.like this there are many pages.also lot of data present in lists like wanted pages, uncategorised categories etc, present in special pages are not uptodate and the cache has to be refreshed.if you could do something regarding this I would be glad--ரவி (பேச்சு) 09:05, 16 ஏப் 2005 (UTC)

Oh, this doesn't appear to be a caching problem. It appears to be a problem with the s/w. This calls for upgrading the s/w to the version in English Wikipedia. Caching problem will reflect only as old version of articles even after they're changed. -- Sundar 09:20, 16 ஏப் 2005 (UTC)

  • I am not sure whether this is actually a bug.I think these lists don't get updated immediately like the category lists and gets updated only once in a while ( not sure of the frequency of update). Sundar, I am away from India for time being and curious to know what this aRiviyal tamil subject is all about.Which class students are studying this subject..is it studied by all educational board students( matric, state board and CBSE, ICSE, anglo indian??).Is it a compilation of brief articles on science topics or is it just like a glossary? are the students required to take a test in it and does it show up in the final exam grade card?If there are well written articles in the aRiviyal tamil book (on the scince topics you have listed in your user page), it will be handy to reproduce them in wikipedia. naming convention for shortcut

Sundar, I feel that all the wikipedia shorts shall be in english itself for ease of typing.or we may name the shortcut with the corresponding english letters to tamil names (eg: WP:AM for wikipedia:aalamaraththadi).But if you feel that we need tamil shortcuts like விபீ:ந.கை , we shall have it without the full stop in between.--ரவி (பேச்சு) 06:07, 4 மே 2005 (UTC)

I think we can have shortcuts in English alone. Of course, this should not be a policy decision i.e. if tomorrow someone wants to create a Tamil shortcut s/he should be free to do so, after all, it is a Tamil wiki. Go ahead and remove the Tamil shortcuts. -- Sundar 06:37, 4 மே 2005 (UTC)

Using subst: to invoke template messages

There is still no definite policy there, but we shall apply our discretion based on the following constraints:

• If use of subst, causes significant increase in the size of a frequently changing page, then it has to be avoided.

• We can almost always avoid subst in article namespace as it'll insert stuff that affects the flow of reading in an edit window eg html stuff.
• I prefer using subst for welcome etc in en wiki and here in talk pages of new users, because
  • they should be able to see how the wikilinking etc is done
  • usually these messages do not have tables and html
  • usually these pages do not change rapidly

and in general because our database size is not too large. This is my personal discretion and I can't claim that this is correct always. :-) -- Sundar 11:28, 21 ஜூன் 2005 (UTC)

• Sundar, right now, links to other users talk pages are red links . so when you click them, it directly leads to edit page of the user's talk page..whiich ina way is convenient, beause you go to other users talk page to regiter comments only.the link to my user talk page at the top is red but when I visit the talk page it becomes blue. also, since the talk page is itself considered as as article ( and has a talk page for a talk page)it shows up in the "article count" in creasing the article count. I've never typed a letter in tamil before i came here. So, in a way wikipedia has been an eye opener for me. I never thought tamil typing could be this easy and it's plenty of fun. country infobox

The India infobox is ready for use, but still the variable names have to be translated. வார்ப்புரு:தகவல்-பெட்டகம் நாடுகள் created by anonymous user is completely translated. I have tried to bring in some Tamil terms there to வார்ப்புரு:தகவற்சட்டம் நாடு, but I am not sure about some of the tamil translations there (eg., TLD, PPP). There is also another template வார்ப்புரு:தகவல்கட்டம் நாடு used in ஐக்கிய இராச்சியம், but this is a bit too wide, and not completely translated. Hi, I came here to ask you a help for the Malayalam Wikipedia. Our pages display numbers(Digits) in malayalam instead of Arabic. The irony is that 99.9% of Malayalis cannot understand Malayalam numbers. Hence we want to change it to the normal Arabic numerals ie. 1,2 etc. I couldn't find the namespace related to numbers in the mediawiki interface. Can you help me to find it out. BNF representation and Parsing of Tamil Grammer !

Your research into the Formal representation of Tamil (Class Venpa) is fascinating. Venpa has strict rules, by parsing it we can say whether a poem is Venpa or not. Certainly the existence of Venpa, which is a Rule Set for certain type of poetry lends it self to parsing. But, does that necessarily show that Tamil to be a structured language? Is it not possible to define Rule Set for poem in any language, and then suggest that language to be a structured language?

You have answered the above question in the report. You have indicated that not just the Class Venpa, but the entire Tamil language is defined as thus. Now, that is a profound claim; justified it seems; you are basing your claim on Tholkapiyam. Theoretically then, it would be possible to define Tamil BNF and parse Tamil. I would certainly be interested in any work that followed your initial research.

If Tamil is highly structured, does that mean it is not flexiable in being a Natural Language? Natural Lanague does have its own advantages...does it not? Are there any other languages that make similar claim?
