மேற்கு செருமானிய மொழி

ஆங்கிலம் (English) என்பது ஒரு மேற்கு செருமானிய மொழியாகும். இது முதன்முதலில் முன்மத்திய கால இங்கிலாந்தில் பேசப்பட்டது. எனினும், இன்று உலகெங்கிலும் பரவலாகப் பேசப்படும் மொழியாகும்.[4] இம்மொழி ஐக்கிய இராச்சியம், அமெரிக்க ஐக்கிய நாடுகள், கனடா, ஆத்திரேலியா, அயர்லாந்து, நியூசிலாந்து மற்றும் சில கரீபியன் நாடுகளில் பெரும்பாலான மக்களால் முதன்மை மொழியாகப் பேசப்படுகிறது. மண்டாரின் சீனம் மற்றும் எசுப்பானிய மொழிக்கு அடுத்ததாக உலகின் மூன்றாவது பெரிய சுதேச மொழியாகவும் இது காணப்படுகிறது.[5] மேலும் இது உலகம் முழுவதும் இரண்டாவது மொழியாகவும் பயிலப்படுகிறது. இம் மொழி ஐரோப்பிய ஒன்றியம், பல்வேறு பொதுநலவாய நாடுகள் மற்றும் ஐக்கிய நாடுகள் போன்ற பல்வேறு உலக அமைப்புக்களின் உத்தியோகபூர்வ மொழியாகவும் உள்ளது.

ஆங்கில மொழி, இன்றைய தென்கிழக்கு சுகாட்டுலாந்தில் காணப்பட்ட இங்கிலாந்தின் ஆங்கிலோ-சாக்சன் அரசுகளில் உருவானது. 17ம் நூற்றாண்டு முதல் 20ம் நூற்றாண்டு வரை பரந்திருந்த பிரித்தானியப் பேரரசின் காரணமாகவும், பின் 20ம் நூற்றாண்டின் நடுப்பகுதியிலிருந்து ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்காவினாலும்[6][7][8][9] உலகெங்கும் பரவியதோடு, சர்வதேச அரங்கில் முன்னணி பெற்ற மொழியாகவும் உருவானது. மேலும் இம்மொழி பல்வேறு பகுதிகளில் பொது மொழியாகவும் பயன்படுத்தப்படுகிறது.[10][11]

வரலாற்று ரீதியாக, 5ம் நூற்றாண்டில் செருமானிய குடியேறிகளான ஆங்கிலோ-சாக்சன் இனத்தவரால் பிரித்தானியாவின் கிழக்குக் கரைக்குக் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட, பண்டைய ஆங்கிலம் எனப்பட்ட பல்வேறு தொடர்புடைய மொழிவழக்குகளில் இருந்து பிறந்ததாகும். ஆங்கிலம் எனும் சொல்லின் மூலம் ஏங்கில்சு[12] எனும் பெயரிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்டதாகும். இது அவ்வினத்தாரின் மூதாதையரின் தேசத்தைக் குறிக்கும் சொல்லாகும். ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களில் குறிப்பிடத்தக்களவு லத்தீன் மொழியிலிருந்தே உருவாயின. ஏனெனில் லத்தீன் மொழியே கிறித்தவ தேவாலயத்தினதும் ஐரோப்பிய அறிஞர் சமுதாயத்தினதும் பொது மொழியாகக் காணப்பட்டது.[13] மேலும், 9ம் மற்றும் 10ம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் இடம்பெற்ற வைக்கிங்குகளின் படையெடுப்பினால் ஆங்கிலத்தில் பண்டைய நோர்சு மொழியின் தாக்கமும் ஏற்பட்டது.

11ம் நூற்றாண்டில் இங்கிலாந்து மீது மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட நோர்மன் படையெடுப்பினால் நோர்மன் பிரெஞ்சு மொழிச் சொற்களும் ஆங்கிலத்தில் கலந்தன. மேலும், இதன் உச்சரிப்பும் சொல்வளமும் ரோமானிய மொழிகளுடன் நெருங்கிய உறவுடையன போன்ற தோற்றத்தை அளித்துள்ளன.[14][15] இத்தாக்கங்களுக்கு உட்பட்ட ஆங்கிலம் மத்தியகால ஆங்கிலம் எனப்பட்டது. 15ம் நூற்றாண்டில் தெற்கு இங்கிலாந்தில் உருவான பாரிய உயிரெழுத்துத் திரிபு காரணமாக மத்திய ஆங்கிலத்திலிருந்து நவீன ஆங்கிலம் உருவானது.

வரலாறு முழுவதும் ஏனைய பல்வேறு மொழிகளிலிருந்து சொற்களை தன்னுள் வாங்கிக்கொண்டமையினால் நவீன ஆங்கிலம் பரந்த சொல்வளமும் சிக்கலான குழப்பமான உச்சரிப்பு முறைகளையும் கொண்டுள்ளது. நவீன ஆங்கிலம் ஐரோப்பிய மொழிகள் மட்டுமல்லாது உலகின் பல்வேறு மொழிகளிலும் இருந்து சொற்களை உள்வாங்கிக் கொண்டுள்ளது. ஒக்சுபோர்ட் ஆங்கில அகராதி 250,000க்கும் அதிகமான வித்தியாசமான பல்வேறு சொற்களைப் பட்டியலிட்டுள்ளது. இவற்றில் பல தொழில்நுட்ப, விஞ்ஞான மற்றும் கொச்சைச் சொற்கள் இடம்பெறவில்லையென்பது குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.[16][17]

சொற் பிறப்பு தொகு

ஆங்கிலம் எனும் சொல் இன்றைய வட செருமனியின் சூட்லாந்தில் அமைந்துள்ள ஏங்கல் எனுமிடத்தைப் பிறப்பிடமாகக் கொண்ட செருமானிய குழுவொன்றின் பெயரான ஏங்கல் என்பதிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்டதாகும்.[18]

முக்கியத்துவம் தொகு

நவீன ஆங்கிலம் சிலவேளைகளில் முதலாவது உலகப் பொது மொழி என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.[19][20] மேலும் தொலைத் தொடர்பு, விஞ்ஞானம், தகவல் தொழில்நுட்பம், வர்த்தகம், கடற்பயணம்,[21] வான் பயணம்,[22] பொழுதுபோக்கு, வானொலி மற்றும் அரசியல்[23] ஆகிய துறைகளில் மிகவும் செல்வாக்குமிக்க, இன்றியமையாத மொழியாக உள்ளது. பிரித்தானியப் பேரரசின் வளர்ச்சியின் பின் இம்மொழி பிரித்தானியத் தீவுகளிலிருந்து உலகெங்கும் பரவத் தொடங்கியது. 19ம் நூற்றாண்டின் பிற்பகுதியில் உலகம் முழுவதும் பரவியது.[24] 16ம் நூற்றாண்டு தொடக்கம் 19ம் நூற்றாண்டு வரையில் பிரித்தானியக் குடியேற்றங்களின் பின் ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்கா, கனடா, ஆத்திரேலியா மற்றும் நியூசிலாந்து ஆகிய நாடுகளின் முதன்மையான மொழியாக உருவானது. இரண்டாம் உலகப் போர் தொடக்கம் ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்காவின் வளரும் பொருளியல் மற்றும் பண்பாட்டு ஆதிக்கம் காரணமாகவும் உலக வல்லரசு எனும் அதன் நிலை காரணமாகவும் உலகம் முழுவதும் ஆங்கில மொழியின் பரவல் விரைவு படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.[20] 20ம் நூற்றாண்டின் இரண்டாம் பாதியில் விஞ்ஞான நோபல் பரிசாளர்கள் அதிகமாக ஆங்கிலேயர்களாகவே உள்ளனர். செருமானிய மொழி பின்தள்ளப்பட்டுள்ளது.[25] 19ம் நூற்றாண்டின் பிற்பாதியிலிருந்து பிரெஞ்சு மொழியைப் பின்தள்ளி, ஆங்கிலம் அரசியலில் ஆதிக்கம் பெற்ற மொழியாக மாறியுள்ளது.

மருத்துவம் மற்றும் கணனியியல் போன்ற இன்னோரன்ன துறைகளில் ஆங்கிலப் பயன்பாட்டறிவு அடிப்படைத் தேவையாக உள்ளது. இதன் விளைவாக ஒரு பில்லியனுக்கும் அதிகமான மக்கள் ஆங்கிலத்தில் அடிப்படை அறிவையேனும் பெற்றுள்ளனர். ஐக்கிய நாடுகளின் ஆறு உத்தியோகபூர்வ மொழிகளில் ஆங்கிலமும் ஒன்றாகும்.[26]

ஆங்கில மொழியின் வளர்ச்சியால் ஏற்பட்ட தாக்கங்களில் ஒன்றாக உலகின் பல பகுதிகளிலும் காணப்பட்ட சுதேச மொழிப் பல்வகைமையின் வீழ்ச்சியைக் குறிப்பிடலாம். மேலும் மொழித்தேய்வுக்கும் இது காரணமாக உள்ளது.[27] இருப்பினும் மறுதலையாக, கிரியோல் மற்றும் பிட்சின் போன்ற ஆங்கிலத்தின் உட்பிரிவுகளினால் ஆங்கிலத்திலிருந்து வித்தியாசமான புதிய மொழிகளும் உருவாகி வருகின்றன.[28]

வரலாறு தொகு

வடகடல் செருமானிய குழுக்களின் மொழிகளிலிருந்தே ஆங்கிலம் உருவானது. இம் மொழிப்பிரிவுகள் நெதர்லாந்து, வடமேற்கு செருமனி மற்றும் டென்மார்க் ஆகிய பிரதேசங்களிலிருந்து பிரித்தானியாவில் குடியேறியோரால் பிரித்தானியாவுக்குக் கொண்டுவரப்பட்டது.[29] அதுவரை, பிரித்தானியாவில் வாழ்ந்தோர் செல்டிக் மொழியாகிய பிரைத்தோனிக் எனும் மொழியைப் பேசியிருக்கலாமென நம்பப்படுகிறது. மேலும் 400 ஆண்டுகால ரோமானிய ஆட்சியினால் லத்தீன் மொழியின் தாக்கமும் இருந்திருக்கக் கூடும்.[30] இவ்வாறு குடியேறியோருள் ஒரு செருமானிய குழுவே ஏங்கில்சு ஆகும்.[31] இவர்களே பிரித்தானியா முழுவதும் பரவிய குழுவினராய் இருக்கக்கூடும் என பீட் நம்புகிறார்.[32] இங்கிலாந்து (ஏங்கிலா லாந்து[33] "ஏங்கில்சுகளின் நாடு") மற்றும் ஆங்கிலம் (பண்டைய ஆங்கிலம் இங்லிசு[34]) ஆகிய சொற்கள் இக்கூட்டத்தாரின் பெயரிலிருந்தே உருவாயின. எனினும், இக்காலப் பகுதியில் பிரிசியா, கீழ் சாக்சனி, சூட்லாந்து மற்றும் தென் சுவீடன் பகுதிகளில் வாழ்ந்த சாக்சன்கள், சூட்டர்கள் போன்ற பல்வேறு இனக்குழுக்களும் பிரித்தானியா நோக்கிக் குடிபெயர்ந்தனர்.[35][36][37]

ஆரம்பத்தில் காணப்பட்ட பண்டைய ஆங்கிலமானது பெரிய பிரித்தானியாவில் இருந்த ஆங்கிலோ சாக்சன் அரசுகளின் பல்வேறு மொழிப்பிரிவுகளைக் கொண்டிருந்தது.[38] எனினும், இம்மொழிப்பிரிவுகளில் ஒன்றான பின் மேல் சாக்சன் மொழிப்பிரிவு பெரிதும் செல்வாக்குச் செலுத்தத் தலைப்பட்டது.

இருவேறு படையெடுப்புக்களின் காரணமாகப் பண்டைய ஆங்கிலம் மாற்றமுற்றது. இவற்றுள் முதலாவதாக 8 ஆம் மற்றும் 9 ஆம் நூற்றாண்டுகளில் பிரித்தானியத் தீவுகளின் வட பகுதிகளை கைப்பற்றிய எலும்பற்ற இவான் மற்றும் ஆல்ப்டான் ராக்னார்சன் ஆகியோரினால் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட வட செருமானிய மொழி பேசும் கூட்டத்தினரால் உருவானதாகும். மற்றையது 11ம் நூற்றாண்டில் ஏற்பட்ட நோர்மன் படையெடுப்பு மூலம் கொண்டுவரப்பட்ட, உரோமானிய மொழியாகிய பண்டைய நோர்மன் மொழி பேசும் கூட்டத்தினரால் ஏற்பட்டது. இம் மொழி ஆங்கிலோ-நோர்மன் எனவும் ஆங்கிலோ-பிரெஞ்சு எனவும் திரிபடைந்தது. அரசாங்கம் மற்றும் சட்டத் துறைகளில் பல்வேறு சொற்களை இம்மொழி அறிமுகப்படுத்தியது. மேலும் சுகண்டினேவிய மற்றும் நோர்மன் சொற்களை உள்வாங்கிக் கொண்ட ஆங்கிலம், ஒரு வாங்கல் மொழியாக (ஏனைய மொழிகளிலிருந்து இலகுவாகச் சொற்களைப் பெறும் தன்மை) மாறியதோடல்லாமல் இதன் இலக்கணமும் இலகுபடுத்தப்பட்டது.

நோர்மன் படையெடுப்பைத் தொடர்ந்து ஏற்பட்ட மொழிப் பெயர்ச்சியால், பண்டைய ஆங்கிலம், மத்திய ஆங்கிலம் எனும் புதிய உருவைப் பெற்றது. இக்காலப் பகுதியில் உருவான செஃப்ரி சோசரின் கன்டர்பெரி கதைகள் எனும் நூல் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது. இக்காலப்பகுதியில் ஐரோப்பிய சமூகத்தில் இலத்தின் மொழி ஒரு பொது மொழியாகக் காணப்பட்டது. ஆரம்பத்தில் இது சமய நடவடிக்கைகளில் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டலும் பின்பு மறுமலர்ச்சிக்காலத்தில் புத்துயிர் பெற்ற தொடர்பாடல் மொழியாக இது உருவானது. இவ்வாறு லத்தீன் மொழியில் எழுத்தாக்கங்களை உருவாக்கியோர்[13] சுதேச ஆங்கிலத்தில் காணப்படாத சொற்களுக்குப் பதிலாக லத்தீன் மொழியிலிருந்து புதிய சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்தினர்.

வில்லியம் சேக்சுபியரின் படைப்புக்கள்[39] மற்றும் சேம்சு மன்னனின் விவிலியம் ஆகியவற்றை உள்ளடக்கிய நவீன ஆங்கிலம், 1550க்குப் பின் உருவானது. பிரித்தானியா குடியேற்ற வல்லரசாகிய பின், பிரித்தானியப் பேரரசின் குடியேற்ற நாடுகளில் ஆங்கிலம் ஒரு பொது மொழியாகப் பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டது. குடியேற்ற காலத்தின் பின்னர் புதிதாக உருவாகிய, பல்வேறு சுதேச மொழிகளைக் கொண்டிருந்த சில நாடுகள் அரசியல் சிக்கல்களைத் தவிர்த்துக் கொள்ளும் பொருட்டு ஆங்கிலத்தைத் பொதுமொழியாகத் தேர்ந்தெடுத்தன. பிரித்தானியப் பேரரசின் வளர்ச்சி காரணமாக வட அமெரிக்கா, இந்தியா, ஆபிரிக்கா, ஆத்திரேலியா மற்றும் பல பகுதிகளில் ஆங்கிலம் வேரூன்றியது.20ம் நூற்றாண்டின் நடுப்பகுதியில் ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்காவின் எழுச்சியுடன் இப்போக்கு மேலும் பல பகுதிகளுக்குப் பரவியது.

அண்ணளவாக 375 மில்லியன் மக்கள் ஆங்கிலத்தைத் தாய்மொழியாகப் பேசுகின்றனர்.[40] ஒரு மொழியைத் தாய்மொழியாகப் பேசுவோரின் எண்ணிக்கையில் ஆங்கிலம் மூன்றாம் இடத்திலுள்ளது. மண்டாரின் சீனமும் எசுப்பானிய மொழியும் முறையே முதலிரு இடங்களில் உள்ளன.[5][41] எவ்வாறாயினும், மொத்த மொழி பேசுவோர் தொகையைப் பார்க்கும்போது ஆங்கிலம் முதலிடத்திலுள்ளது.[42][43]

இரண்டாம் மொழியாகப் பேசுவோர் தொகை பற்றிய மதிப்பீடுகள் 470 மில்லியனிலிருந்து ஒரு பில்லியனுக்கும் அதிகமான தொகை வரை மாறுபடுகிறது.[44][45] மொழிப் பேராசிரியர் தாவிது கிறிசுடலின் கணிப்பின்படி, தாய்மொழிப் பேச்சாளர்களுக்கும் ஏனைய பேச்சாளர்களுக்குமிடையிலான விகிதம் 1க்கு 3 ஆக உள்ளது.[46]

ஆங்கிலத் தாய்மொழிப் பேச்சாளர்களை அதிகளவில் கொண்ட நாடுகளின் பட்டியலில், 2006 கணிப்பீட்டின்படி, இறங்குவரிசைப்படி, ஐக்கிய அமெரிக்கா (226 மில்லியன்),[47] ஐக்கிய இராச்சியம் (61மில்லியன்),[48] கனடா (18.2மில்லியன்),[49] ஆசுதிரேலியா (15.5 மில்லியன்),[50] நைசீரியா (4 மில்லியன்),[51] அயர்லாந்து (3.8மில்லியன்),[48] தென்னாபிரிக்கா (3.7 மில்லியன்),[52] மற்றும் நியூசிலாந்து (3.6 மில்லியன்) என்பன உள்ளன.[53]

    Wikipedia's India estimate of 350 million includes two categories – "English Speakers" and "English Users". The distinction between the Speakers and Users is that Users only know how to read English words while Speakers know how to read English, understand spoken English as well as form their own sentences to converse in English. The distinction becomes clear when you consider the China numbers. China has over 200~350 million users that can read English words but, as anyone can see on the streets of China, only handful of million who are English speakers.
